An Introduction to a Friend of a Good Reference Book

  June 12th, 2006

  Dear Lisa,

You have told me you will take CET4 in three months and you are very worried now. Here I want to recommend you a good reference book and hope it will be helpful to you.

The book, A Guide to CET4, is edited by a famous professor who has years of English teaching experience.

OK, now let me tell you how to use this book more efficiently and effectively. When you get the book, first look at the table of contents, which will help you to understand the structure of this book. This book consists of three parts — one is the tutoring and exercises arranged according to different examination types; another provides ten model tests of CET4; and the last part is the keys to all the exercises in the book.

While reading, you can either read chapter by chapter, or just find out and read the chapters that appeal to you. One thing I? like to remind you is to make full use of the model tests. Practice makes perfect, right? When you check the answers in the third part, read the explanations carefully. Having this book is really like having a professional tutor by your side.

OK, that? all for the introduction to this book. I hope it can help. Wish you good luck in the coming test.

  Yours sincerely,

  Zhang Hua

  文中應(yīng)包括的要點(diǎn):

  教育使人發(fā)展;教育使社會(huì)進(jìn)步。作為發(fā)展中國(guó)家,中國(guó)尤其要重視教育事業(yè)發(fā)展。

  The Importance of Education

Education in almost every country is regarded as both an individual benefit and a social necessity.

It is a general view that every citizen has the right and obligation to become educated. People believe that, through education, an individual acquires the knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities which will enable him to fit into society and improve his social status. Education helps to shape the society and develop the national strength. Very often, they look to ed ucation as the cause of personal and national success and the cure of social and economic ills, holding the view that the future of the nation depends largely on education.

In a developing country such as China, our investment in education must enjoy top priority. This is crucial for China to catch up with the developed nations in todays surging waves of technological revolution. Otherwise. the gap between China and advanced countries will be widened rather than bridged.

Can Computers Replace Teachers in English Teaching?

Nowadays computer-aided instruction is getting more and more popular on the campus throughout the world, especially in teaching English. More and more students tend to learn English independently with the help of multimedia learning software. They claim that they have more freedom of learning whatever they like at their own pace, with both ease and care. Whats more, computer-aided instruction is an original way of learning, which can arouse students interest.

However some people believe that teachers can better help students learn knowledge and acquire skills. They argue that, for one thing, students cannot talk to machines. It goes without saying that to learn English better, students should talk to teachers and get in touch with them. For another, computers cannot supervise students, thus some students spend the precious time not on English, but on net chatting or browsing porn websites.

As far as I am concerned, computers cannot replace teachers in English teaching because students need to contact human beings, not

machines. At the same time, they should try their best to gain more from computer-assisted programs. By combining the two methods, students can learn English better.

  Life at College

There is a tendency among many young people that they work very hard in their studies before they enter universties. But once they are admitted to universities or colleges, they no longer show much interest in their studies.

The only purpose for a lot of students to go to university is to gei a diploma, which they think will mean success for them in the future. As a matter of fact, whats important for a student to study at a universty or college is not only to get a diploma, but also to receive higher education so as to be competent for the tasks that will be assgned to him.

Therefore those who tend to take things easy are advised to take serious attitude towards their studies at universities or colleges, otherwise they will have an unsuccessful career.

  2. People travel for many reasons, but perhaps the most common is travelling for pleasure.

  3. Travel is also one of the best means for learning.

  Travel

Travel has become a world-wide activity. Never before have so many people travelled to so many different parts of the world. With new modes of fast and comfortable transport,

more and more people are tempted to leave their homes to see more of the world.

People travel for many reasons but perhaps the most common is travelling for pleasure. It provides an effective way to get your mind off your work. When you return, you are fresh and energetic and ready to work harder.

Travel is also one of the best means for learning. One may have heard or read about something, but one can never get an accurate picture of it until one sees it. I believe that the knowledge obtained from actual experience is more valuable than that obtained from books.

  Buying or Borrowing Books?

Life without books is life without light. By books, we improve the material gain and elevate our spiritual civility; by books we praise the good andthe wicked; by books, we inform the wise and educate the ignorant. There are generally two ways in which we can have access to books: borrowing or buying. While millions are borrowing books, I still think buying them best suits me and give me the greatest enjoyment.

Admittedly, there are many merits for borrowing books. For one thing, borrowing books can save us huge amounts of money. And of course, with the money saved we can do other more worthy things .And also, as we borrow books from the library and friends, we normally have deadline to finish them, and consequently we can read more books in a limited time. And we can, above all, better our efficiency of our reading just as a famous Chinese saying goes, “books can not be read unless borrowed.”

However, some advantages for buying books are more obvious and compelling. One of them, definitely not shared by the choice of borrowing books, is the abundance of freedom that buying books can offer us. Since we can keep the books as long as we wish, we can read as much as we want. Another strength of owing books is that we can take whatever notes on the margin of the pages of the books. And finally, the process of selecting and keeping books can be a great fun that borrowing books can by no means offer.

Mobile telephones are becoming more and more popular. Even the students on campus begin to use mobile telephone. M obile telephone, on the one hand, is good to the students. For one thing , it enables them to keep in touch with their friends and family more conveniently and quickly. For another, it can make the students fashionable and proud.

On the other hand, mobile telephone has a negative effect on the students. First, it will cost them more money than before. Second. it will distract them from their study. Third, it will sometimes become a nuisance especially when it rings in class or in the library.

In my opinion. it is not good for the students on campus to use mobile telephone. Since the students main purpose on campus is to study, they should pay much attention to their study. If they want to use mobile telephone, they can use it after graduation.

  Proposal for an Orientation Program

Dear Sir or Madam,I’m xxx. I’m writing to make a proposal to conduct an orientation program for freshmen. The major purpose of the orientation program is to enable freshmen to adapt to the campus environment and academic life as soon as possible. The duration of the project is expected to be one week. Participants include all freshmen, teachers and academic staff.

The orientation is divided into three parts: a school lecture, a student activity and a campus tour. In the school lecture, we will introduce the school background, professional training objectives and how to select courses, so as to help students quickly embark on their learning journey. At the student activity, there will be some interesting games to help freshmen get to know each other quickly and make contacts. The last part is a campus tour, where students will visit the schools teaching building, library, restaurant, and so on, so as to help them to quickly adjust to campus life.

I hope the freshmen can quickly adapt to the new environment and academic studies through this orientation. I’m looking forward to your reply. Wish you all the best.

Recently a blind date including 20 young men and women has been held by an organization. Some people see it as a good way to meet different people while others argue that its not possible to find ones partner between two people who have not previously met. As far as Im concerned, blind dating is worth trying and you can find your true love there!

First of all, nowadays many young people are always busying with their work; therefore they have little spare time to meet with their future partner, leading to more and more leftover women and men. According to a study, a happy life includes work and family balance, which means a harmonious family including the couple may contribute to a comparably happy life.

Whats more, during a blind date, usually the basic information is given to both parts; therefore its more reliable to know a persons family background, his or her job, religion etc. As is known to all, a couple should have the same belief in value, wealth, thus preventing many potential conflicts.

Last but not least, through blind dates, one can meet people with different personalities, thus having a clearer idea about which kind of person is suitable for being a lifelong mate. And blind dates are also great chances to make friends in the same age group.

To sum up, blind dating can be a good way to find ones future husband or wife. Its feasible and reliable. Hope that evryone can find true love in blind dates!

My View on Helping Others in Need

In modern society we are often sorry to see that people are reluctant to help others out, not to mention helping a stranger; offering a helping hand seems to be out of accord with the times.

Then what’s wrong with our society? Some people may say that facing skyrocketinghousing prices, expensive medical expenditure and soaring commodity prices, they have no choice but to struggle to make a living, and thus it would be impossible to spare a hand to help others because it may bring them into trouble. Therefore, standing by indifferently is their only choice.

However, is it necessary to be selfish in order to survive, or in order to ensure that people do not take advantage of you? In my opinion, helping others brings a strong sense of accomplishment. What’s more, the evaluation criteria for judging one individual’s success should be modified so that offering a helping hand to people in need is encouraged and welcomed in our society all the time.

Being online is no longer something new or fresh in our life. To some extent, it has become part of our daily life. We can do a lot of things online, such as searching for information and communicating with friends far away. But recently another helpful online activity has become very in. That is online education.

Why could online education be so popular within such a short period of time? Among other reasons, the quick development of the Internet should be an essential one, which makes all our dreams of attending class in the distance possible. Another underlying reason is the quick development of both society and technology. Today, modern science and technology is developing with fantastic speed. To catch up with this development we all feel an urgent and strong desire to study. However, due to the great pace of modern society, many people are too busy to study full time at school. Online education just comes to their aid.

Personally, I appreciate this new form of education. Its indeed a helpful complement to the traditional educational means. It can provide different learners with more flexible and versatile ways of learning. Best of all, with online education, we can stick to our jobs and at the same time study and absorb the latest knowledge..

Should the Golden Week Holidays Be Abolished?

There is no denying the fact that the introduction of the Golden Week holidays in China has considerably promoted the development of the nations economy and touring industry and enriched peoples life. People around the country have spent more time and money traveling and relaxing themselves.

As every coin has two sides, the Golden Week holidays have also brought about piles of problems. For one thing, due to the fact that people across the country are spending their vacations during the same period of time, it is terribly crowded almost everywhere: trains, buses, hotels, scenic spots, etc., which have ruined peoples mood for vacations. For another, some businessmen take advantage of the weeklong holidays and raise the priced of commodities and services.

Personally, I believe that it is necessary for people to have long vacations, but there is no need for them to have the vacations during the same period of time. Instead, they should be allowed the freedom to arrange their own vacations. Only in this way can they really relax and refresh themselves for a new round of work.

  Conducting Moral Education in Colleges

In the current world, college students become morally more tolerant to the phenomena such as exam-cheating, academic dishonesty and default on loans. In this case, its urgently important that we conduct moral education in college.

Moral education is beneficial in the following aspects. To begin with, it makes us aware of our personal responsibility. We must comply with social moral standards and learn to behave and conduct ourselves in society. Secondly, moral education teaches us to shun evil and do good, turning the uncivilized to the civilized. Thirdly, with higher moral standards, we will be more considerate towards others and avoid quarrels or conflicts, which contributes to maintaining a harmonious society.

As for how to conduct moral education in college, on one hand, theoretical moral education should be integrated into all aspects of campus life, including classroom teaching and extracurricular activities. On the other hand, we should encourage students to take part in moral practices such as volunteer activities. Through these measures, they will know better about the meaning of life and shoulder their social responsibilities.

  6. Should People Own Cars or Not?

  范文一

There is no denying the fact that it has been a hotly debated topic in China whether people should have their own cars. Peoples opinions differ sharply on this issue. Some hold the positive view. They say that the car provides the most convenient form of transportation. Besides, a car is a comfortable way to travel, especially in winter. Finally, a driver is usually safe in his car when he is out at night.

Others, however, hold the opposite view. They say that there are many disadvantages to owning a car. For one thing, it can be very expensive to purchase and run a car. For another, owning a car can also cause worry and stress. It is exhausting to drive a car in heavy traffic. What is worse, cars are responsible for most of the smog in cities, which pollutes the environment seriously.

In spite of all the above mentioned, I still favor owning a car. The reason is that the car gives a person the freedom to schedule his own time. Though we are confronted with a problem of energy crisis, I am sure that the real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that uses cheap, efficient fuel and does not contaminate the air.

  范文:

  Immoral Behaviors in Public

We have all seen or experienced it before---those inappropriate and often unsanitary actions which disgust and annoy most cultured people in society. Spitting, littering, peeing in public---all these and others fall into this category. I personally had the embarrassing experience one late night of seeing a man peeing alongside the river. He was not embarrassed at all.

Such inappropriate public behavior has a terrible effect on society. For one thing, most unsanitary behavior can spread germs and diseases to the general public. For another, they contribute to the pollution of the environment and show little or no consideration for the environment.

We must take steps as a society to improve this situation. Our government should sponsor public announcements and advertisements to emphasize the cultural inappropriateness of this kind of behaviors. Our schools and teachers should teach and enforce acceptable standards for all students. And in the home, parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles should all work together to teach the children what is right by example.

  作文題目:

There are many ways of traveling. People may travel by plane if they want to travel far and reach their destination in a shorter time. It is the most comfortable but expensive way. Most people travel by train because it is a less expensive way but the compartments are cramped and stuffy. Bus journey is a cheaper way but it is spent on narrow, bumpy roads which are crowded with traffic. Trips by ship may be the cheapest and most comfortable way but it takes too much time.

I like traveling by bike. I can set out when I like and stop when I like. I can go wherever I like so that I can enjoy delightful spots rarely visited by other travelers. When I feel tired, I sit down by the bike and have a good rest. Besides, I can save much money for tickets and much time in waiting for the train or bus. I can cover more places by riding a bike than going on foot.

Traveling by bike is good to health. It is really a sort of good exercise to strengthen ones muscles and to test ones will. Moreover, it brings no pollution to the air. So it helps to clean the atmosphere.

  參考翻譯:

The lifestyle of Mongolian herdsmen is distinctive.Herdsmen like eating beef, mutton and dairyproducts and drinking black tea and brick tea. Mostof them live in Mongolian yurt with a skylight forventilating and lighting. Mongolian people areexperts at horseback riding and shooting and skilled in singing and dancing. There arehorse racing, wrestling, archery contest and wonderful dancing and singing performances duringthe festival.During each Nadam Fair, people from different places come to compete and watchperformances, instantly turning the quiet grasslands into a sea of pleasure.

  3.頂上開(kāi)有天窗:采用介詞短語(yǔ)with a skylight,簡(jiǎn)潔明了。

Limiting tbe Buying of Cars or Not?

Beijing has placed strict restriction on the number of newly purchased car in the city and the policy bas sparked heated discussion. Some people support the policy, saying it,s a powerful method to cope with the severe traffic congestion in the capital. With cars increasing drastically in the past few years, severe traffic jams occur not only in rush hours but at any time of the day now.

Others, however, aie strongly against the limitations. They argue that the great number of official cars, which are frequently used, is a big factor causing traffic congestion. But the policy mainly aims at private cars and has no dear restrictions on the use of official cars. Besides, car purchase limitation would hinder the development of Chinas automobile industry, and more people would lose their jobs as a result.

Personally, I think the restriction of buying and use of cars, official cars incladed, is inevitable and just a matter of time for Beijing. If the number of cars is not limited, there will be a huge disaster for the environment, road resources, the travel demands of normal people and the improvement of living standards

The past few years have witnessed a mounting number ofChinese students attending college abroad.(指出有爭(zhēng)議)To this practice, people’s attitudes differ considerably. Some applaud it warmly whereas others criticize and even condemn it harshly.Personally, I believe that we should not go to extremes, forstudying abroadhas both advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, going to college abroadis beneficial in many ways. Most importantly, the general level of education abroad is higher than that at home. Secondly, studying abroad can broaden one’s horizon, which can also add to his or her edge of competition.

On the other hand, studying abroadhas some demerits. In the first place, tuition fees abroad are much higher than those at home, which might prove a grave burden on most families. In the second place, students may find it difficult to adapt to the environment abroad, especially when they are weak in the foreign language.

Taking into consideration all the above-mentioned, we may come to the conclusion thatstudying abroadis a two-edged sword, which brings along both benefits and trouble. One should make his or her decision according to personal conditions. If he or she is not well prepared financially or has severe language barriers, he or she may well go to college at home. When time is ripe, he or she can choose to pursue graduate study abroad.
